The song “You are my Sunshine,” was written by Jimmie Davis and Charles Mitchell in 1939. This song was considered one of the state songs of Louisiana because of its association with Davis, who was a country singer as well as the governor of the state. The genre of the song is considered country, however, newer versions of the song don’t sound country. The song has lost its country sound because it has been put in the mainstream of the American popular culture. This song is telling a sad love story. The writer sings about someone he loves dearly leaving him. This specific person is the sunshine in his life and he begs for his sunshine to not be taken away.
