Exploring the history of the groove

You Are My Sunshine

YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE

You Are My Sunshine, published in 1939, has a beautiful story behind it and carries on a long legacy. This well-known song has been recognized as one of Louisiana’s state songs because of its association with Jimmie Davis, a country singer and governor of the state. The version you are listening to is sung by the Rice Brother’s Gang, a group of brothers from Atlanta, Georgia, that formed in 1934. The inspiration behind this piece was a seventeen-page fan letter that expressed their love for the band. Although it was originally written as a country song, it has evolved into an American phenomenon worldwide. Today, parents and guardians from all over the world use this piece as a nursery song for their children.
