The song “Some Enchanted Evening” was a love song for the Broadway musical South Pacific created by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II in 1949 based on the award winning novel Tales of the South Pacific by James A. Michener. All of the songs in this show managed to make their way onto the Billboard chart, but “Some Enchanted Evening” was at the top of the pack. These songs stayed on for weeks, but the lasting power is even greater than that. “Some Enchanted Evening” shared its name with a performance to celebrate the Hammerstein centennial in 1995. During its first year, the musical had 1,925 performances, and, a year later, it won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Those weren’t the only accolades gifted to the show, however; it also won thirteen Tony Awards with the original cast of the show.
