Before being famously featured as the outro song for the iconic movie “Goodfellas” this emotionally charged song titled “Layla” was a worldwide hit written and performed by Derek and the Dominos, a band that featured Eric Clapton.
The song began when Clapton read “The Story of Layla and Majun” , a poem about a forbidden love between a boy and a girl named Layla. Clapton identified with this, as he too longed for a forbidden love with Pattie Boyd, the wife of Clapton’s best friend, lead guitarist of the beatles, George Harrison. Clapton was driven to madness from an unsatisfied desire which led him to create a ballad in Layla’s honor, which served as the genesis for this song. Now it ranks #27 on rolling stones top 500 songs of all time.
In 1979, Boyd divorced Harrison to marry Clapton and despite the betrayal Harrison and Clapton remained good friends.
